Browser Fingerprinting: A survey
Nataliia Bielova, PhD et al
All you need to know about #fingerprinting
This is a high-quality and in-depth assessment of fingerprints (particularly browser FP)
They evaluate
– why are they important in the industry
– differences with other #tracking technologies, like #cookies
– evolution
– effectiveness to track individuals and impact on #privacy
The section on Defenses is really useful for #dataprotection professionals (p15ss)
They provide recommendations to reduce the impact of this practice
1) increasing device diversity and changing browsers
2) presenting a homogeneous FP by using Tor browser
3) decreasing the surface of browser APIs to minimise the amount of data collected, by disabling plugins and tracking scripts (however, as the authors highlight this method may break many sites)
