The Letter Room (2020)
Short film directed by Elvira Lind and starred by Oscar Isaac
It depicts the story about a prison officer that is transferred to the letter room, where he (Oscar Isaac) must check inmates correspondence. He must scan the letters looking for inappropriate content to be confiscated: contraband, tattoo templates, pornography, indications of violence, terrorism, drug smuggling.
While he is not allowed to read the whole content of the letters (‘read the letters in full’), he soon finds them intriguing and plunges into the inmates’ #privacy.
This begs the following questions. Is privacy a right that every citizen can enjoy or, on the contrary, is limited to those who are not in prison? How can be conciliated the right to inmates private life (who they as citizens certainly enjoy) and public interests (security, crime prevention)?
An excellent short film to enjoy this weekend
