Enemy of the State (1998)
Director: Tony Scott, and starred by Will Smith, Gene Hackman, Jon Voight
A privacy bill was to be debated in Congress and after a congressman refused an offer/threat made by the head of the NSA to withdraw the draft bill, the latter was killed. A birdwatcher accidentally recorded the crime and later the tape ends up in a lawyer’s bag (Will Smith) and he becomes targeted by the NSA
The movie depicts the perils of granting unlimited powers to the state agencies, particularly in #surveillance, quashing #privacy and #dataprotection, under the guise of the protection of national security and foreign threats.
Larry King at the end brilliantly summarises the problem in question
«How to draw the line between protection of national security (obviously the government’s need to obtain intelligence data) and the protection of civil liberties, particularly the sanctity of my home? you have no right to come into my home»
