Snowden (2016) #weekendbreak
Directed by Oliver Stone and starred by Joseph Gordon-Levitt (as Snowden)
The film tells the story of Edward Snowden, a former CIA employee (2006-2009), NSA subcontractor (Dell, 2009-2012; and then for Booz Allen Hamilton, 2012-2013), where, he started copying classified information that he later leaked to the press.
The movie goes through some of the most appalling #surveillance programs that the US has implemented so for.
– XKeyscore: system for searching and analyzing global Internet data
– PRISM system that collects stored internet communications based on demands made to internet companies (e.g. Google) under Sec 702 FISA Act
While the story may be well-know it is still shocking the width and pervasiveness of official surveillance programs (US in particular), disregarding fundamental rights
On the disclosures, Obama in 2013 said ‘the way in which these disclosures happened have been damaging to the intelligence capabilities of the US, I think there was a way for us to have a conversation without that damage’.
I don’t believe this conversation would have ever taken place, hadn’t Snowden leaked the documents.
