Toolkit for organisations considering using data analytics – UK ICO

The Information Commissioner’s Office has released a Toolkit for organisations considering using data analytics

– it defines data analytics as ‘the use of software to automatically discover patterns in data sets and use them to make predictions, classifications, or risk scores’

– this tool also useful for organisations that do not use AI (systems performing tasks that normally require human intelligence) as part of their data analytics project.

It first determines the legal regime the company will process personal data (GDPR/UK DPA vs UK DPA law enforcement provisions), and then it asks questions concerning:
– lawfulness
– accountability and governance
– data protection principles
– DS rights

Thereafter, it produces a brief report with advice for your data analytics project, suggesting practical actions the organisation can take, along with links to additional guidance to further improve the DP compliance.

It is helpful as a first quick approach to know or clarify the organization’s obligation -either under the GDPR or UK DPA2018-, but before full implementation of a data analytics -powered by AI or not- it is advisable to consult your DPO or a data protection professional well versed in these novel technologies
