Why AI system should be regulated?

Every time a new technology is introduced into the market, it will undoubtedly create new risks to individuals. Some of them are clearly foreseen whereas others don’t.

For instance, when cars were created (by Benz around 1890) there were no safety regulations and hence cars did not include safety features. The introduction of security features was a combination of state regulation and companies’ best practices to improve the quality of their products: headrests (1921), laminated windscreens (1927), turn signals (1939), lap seatbelts (1949), ABS (1971), and so on. Then, many of these safety measures became either mandatory by law or standard for some companies.

In a nutshell, every product that creates new risks to individuals and society should be regulated to minimise the risks and the impact of these risks.

The benefits that #AI systems bring to society are well-known. So is the potential to produce damages. The ability of AI systems to damage individuals, even societies in general, is a compelling argument to support the regulations of these technologies.

We may disagree on the details of the regulation, but on the fact that regulation is needed, there should be no doubt at all.

Tomorrow with Jose Belo at 19:30 CEST we will discuss some aspects of the new AIR draft: «The EU’s Proposed AI Regulation: Expected impact and intersections for privacy», hosted by the Lisboa (Portugal) Chapter of the IAPP – International Association of Privacy Professionals.

We’ll plan to make a brief introduction to the regulation and then to discuss the potential impacts for #privacy and #dataprotection, from the side of individuals and also how this may affect the industry.

Once again, I’m very thankful to Telma CandeiasJoão Lamiml and João Miguel Gabriel for the kind invitation!
